2015 ended
on a sad note with Natalie Cole’s death on December 31st at the age
of 65. She began her career as a successful soul singer – “This Will Be” is one
of the sassiest and best examples of that genre – and later moved on to perform
the standards of an earlier age. For better or worse, she’s probably best known
for her posthumous duet “Unforgettable” with her father, the great singer and
pianist Nat King Cole. I’m normally not a fan of virtual duets, especially when
one of the partners has to be summoned back from the grave, but this one’s a
glorious exception.
