Jerry Butler

I’ve previously posted that Jerry Butler was one of my favorite singers, so I won’t repeat myself here. There was more to Butler than his vocal work, however: he co-wrote many of his hits (as well as “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long” with Otis Redding); started the Butler Songwriters Workshop, where he mentored young Chicago-area songwriters in a successful effort to get some material that he could record; and served on the Cook County Board of Commissioners from 1986 through 2018.

Favorite songs:

Giving Up On Love

Only The Strong Survive

Mr. Dream Merchant

He Will Break Your Heart

Need To Belong

I Dig You Baby

Life's Unfortunate Sons

Moon River

Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground

Make It Easy On Yourself

I'm A Telling You

For Your Precious Love (Jerry Butler & The Impressions)

Let It Be Me (duet with Betty Everett)

I Stand Accused

Never Give You Up
