As a fan of a wide variety of popular (and not-so-popular) music from the 1950s (and sometimes even earlier) up through the present, one of my bucket list projects for years has been to put together a list of my 100 favorite songs of all time. At some point I decided that, once I got around to figuring that out, I could put it out on a blog, for the infinitesimally small proportion of the Internet world that might be interested. So, here we are. While the Top 100 will be a major focus, I also plan to post on a variety of other musical (and occasionally non-musical) topics, in which you may or may not be interested. (If a particular posting doesn’t ring your bell, you’re only a few clicks away from a dancing cat video on YouTube.)

Notable Quote #10

“There is no act, no crime, no petty deceit which he would not commit, and which would not be at once represented on the lips of those about him as a great deed.”

From Tolstoy’s War And Peace, by way of a column in this morning’s Washington Post.

Note – Tolstoy was referring to Napoleon.

LP #33 Marvin Gaye – What’s Going On (1971)

Mother, mother
There's too many of you crying
Brother, brother, brother
There's far too many of you dying

Motown turned out classic hit singles by the truckload in the 1960s and beyond. This is arguably the first really significant Motown album. “What’s Going On” and “Inner City Blues”, the opening and closing tracks, are as relevant now, almost 50 years later, as they were when the record was released.

Favorite tracks:

Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)
What’s Happening Brother
Mercy Mercy Me
Save The Children

Lyric Of The Day #13 (May 11, 2020)

Got to be closer to you

Not a brand-new pandemic song, but one from the 1987 movie The Big Easy. Who knew Dennis Quaid could both sing and write songs???

A-wop-bop-a-loo-bop-a-wop-bam-boom!

Interesting trivia item from the Post’s obituary: In 1992, he recorded a children’s album, “Shake It All About,” which included a freewheeling version of “The Hokey Pokey” and other kindergarten classics.

Favorite songs:
Tutti Frutti
Good Golly Miss Molly
Long Tall Sally
Lucille
Keep A Knockin’
Jenny, Jenny
Slippin’ And Slidin’
Great Gosh A’Mighty
The Girl Can’t Help It

LP #32 Linda Ronstadt – Hasten Down The Wind (1976)

The two familiar tracks here are “That’ll Be The Day” and “Crazy”, but even better are Ronstadt’s outstanding versions of lesser-known songs, most notably including three by Karla Bonoff and one by Warren Zevon.

Favorite tracks:

Hasten Down The Wind
The Tattler
Lose Again
Give One Heart
Try Me Again

Notable Quotes #9

Lyric Of The Day #12 (May 6, 2020)

Spent all afternoon sanitizing my hand sanitizer

And it’s for a good cause, too!
