As a fan of a wide variety of popular (and not-so-popular) music from the 1950s (and sometimes even earlier) up through the present, one of my bucket list projects for years has been to put together a list of my 100 favorite songs of all time. At some point I decided that, once I got around to figuring that out, I could put it out on a blog, for the infinitesimally small proportion of the Internet world that might be interested. So, here we are. While the Top 100 will be a major focus, I also plan to post on a variety of other musical (and occasionally non-musical) topics, in which you may or may not be interested. (If a particular posting doesn’t ring your bell, you’re only a few clicks away from a dancing cat video on YouTube.)

  1. Received your card, and went online to view the top albums of all time by listeners. First surprise: #6 The Clash? Of course these lists reveal more about the listeners than the quality of the albums, but this one still surprised me. Second, the choice of Revolver over Rubber Soul. Hmm. Wonder why.
    Of course, I assume we both have another Steely Dan album chosen before Aja.
    But the list also got me to thinking about my own favorite Beatle albums.
    1- Sgt. Pepper (purchased in 1967 couldn't believe my delight that the album included the lyrics!);
    2- Abbey Road (spent many hours at my desk in bedroom during HS listening to side 2 again and again);
    3- Rubber Soul (my older sister received this as a Christmas gift in 1966 and played it over and over so the entire house could hear it);
    4- White Album (listened to this many, many times on the 8-track in the family car after I got my license as I "drove around");
    5- Beatles '65 (one classic single after another).
    Somewhere, however, there must be a place for the only two albums I have purchased in several different listening platforms over the decades: LP, 8-track, cassette, CD, and streaming:
    Closer to Home - Grand Funk Railroad
    Tapestry - Carole King
    Says more about the listener than the quality of the albums.

  2. When they did a similar poll in 2005, 5 of the top 10 were Beatles albums. Having just two this time seems a little more reasonable.

    7 of my top 10 made the list. In addition to Born To Run and Abandoned Luncheonette, they were:
    Tapestry -- #10 (on their list and my list)
    Donald Fagen -- The Nightfly (#364)
    David + David -- Boomtown (#1073)
    Marshall Crenshaw (eponymous) (#520)
    Gin Blossoms -- New Miserable Experience (#1132)
