So, neither wearing my Phillie Phanatic cap nor providing a
cheering counterpoint to the inevitable ocean of boos for Bryce Harper helped
this afternoon. Oh well – at least it was a win for the “new” home team.
It was well-deserved. The Phils managed only 5 hits against
MacKenzie Gore and 3 relievers, none of which came after the 5th inning. Reserve
infielder Edmundo Sosa had a 2-out RBI single in the 2nd and a somewhat
surprising home run into the visitors’ bullpen in the 5th. Their baserunning
was nothing to write home about, either.
Meanwhile, Philadelphia starter Cristopher Sánchez had trouble locating his pitches, and many of the ones that did cross the plate were hit hard. The Nats also stole 5 bases without being caught, 3 of them by Lane Thomas. I’m still not sure how they only managed to score single runs in the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th, but it wound up being enough.
